Here's an abridged list of specific contributions Dell has made to the Linux community during our involvement with Linux.
  • Hardware donations to Linux organizations such as kernel.org, the Fedora Project, Open Source Development Labs, LWN.net, Linux ACPI project, Red Hat, Novell/SuSE, and others.
  • Developers maintain, review code, and/or regularly provide patches for specific projects (not incidental issue discovery).
    Every device driver in use on a Dell system. In most cases, drivers are written and maintained by the hardware vendor, though Dell engineers offer advice and patches as needed.

    • LSI SCSI and RAID device drivers
    • QLogic FibreChannel device drivers
    • Emulex FibreChannel device drivers
    • Intel e100 and e1000 network device drivers
    • Broadcom tg3 and bnx2 network device drivers
    • OpenIPMI device drivers and initscripts
    • SATA device drivers
    • USB device drivers
    • Dell-specific BIOS and systems management drivers
    Common kernel code:
    • BIOS Enhanced Disk Drive support
    • EFI Variables support
    • GUID Partition table support
    • CRC32 libraries and cleanups
    • PPP MPPE support
    Common userspace code: OS Distribution-specific code:
    • Red Hat anaconda features
    • SuSE YaST features
    • Common Device Driver Model work with Novell/SuSE and Red Hat, DKMS support for this model.
  • Hundreds of thousands of person-hours of testing, issue discovery, debugging, code and documentation changes.
  • Participation and presentations in Linux conferences such as LinuxWorldExpo, the Ottawa Linux Symposium, the Linux Kernel Summit, Red Hat Summit, Novell Brainshare.
